George Gibson McMurtry (November 6, 1876 – November 22, 1958) was a United States Army officer, a Medal of Honor recipient and a Harvard Law-educated Wall Street lawyer. He first served in the Army as a member of the Rough Riders during the Spanish–American War. He received the Medal of Honor as the executive officer of the Lost Battalion during World War I. December 16, 1903, he married Mabel C. Post on Long Island. He was a member of Bar Harbor Club, Pot & Kettle Club. Tombstone in Ledgelawn Cemetery. [show more]

Description:
Luere B. Deasy was born on February 8, 1859 in Gouldsboro to Daniel and Emma L. (Moore) Deasy. He was educated at the State Normal School in Castine. He did not attend college, but received a law degree from Boston University Law School. Deasy was admitted to the Bar in 1884. Prior to sitting on the Court, Deasy practiced in Bar Harbor. Deasy served as President of both the Hancock County Bar Association and the Maine State Bar Association. He was elected to the Maine State Senate and served as its President. Deasy was appointed an Associate Justice of the Supreme Judicial Court by Governor Milliken on September 25, 1918. On October 1, 1929, he was appointed Chief Justice by Governor Gardiner. He served as Chief until his retirement on February 7, 1930, when he returned to private practice in Bar Harbor. Deasy died on March 13, 1940, in Portland, at the age of 81. Wendell Gilley is a name well known among carvers and carving collectors. Author of The Art of Bird Carving: A Guide to a Fascinating Hobby, one of the earliest instructional books on the subject, Gilley was a pioneer in the field of decorative bird carving. By his estimate, he created “ten thousand birds of pine and paint” between 1931 and 1983. (Gilley also loved alliteration; it should be noted that most of his carvings were made of basswood.) Addie Gilley’s created an outstanding collection of her husband’s work. The carvings that Addie so wisely saved over the years became the core of the Museum’s permanent collection. Wendell and Addie were the guests of honor at the opening of the Gilley Museum on July 12, 1981. They remained active in the museum until their deaths a few months apart in 1983.

Savage (Milbridge 1903-Northeast Harbor 1979), designer of Thuya Gardens and The Asticou Azalea Gardens, first chairman of the Mount Desert Larger Parish, selectman for the Town of Mount Desert, representative to the State Legislature and member of local committees, including the Town Planning Board and the Chamber of Commerce. He was also manager of the Asticou Inn in Northeast Harbor and member of the Acadia Corporation. In 1928 he became First Trustee of the Asticou Terraces. Held the position of Town Code Enforcement Officer and Building Inspector; trustee to the Northeast Harbor Union Church; Director of the Northeast Harbor and Seal Harbor Water Companies and the Northeast Harbor Neighborhood House; Chairman of the Northeast Harbor Library's Board of Trustees; member of the Village Improvement Society. Robert (Bob) Richard Pyle was born on October 22, 1945 in Phoenixville, PA, the son of Louise Kaler Sawtelle and James Wesley Pyle. Brought as an infant to Searsport where he attended grammar school, he began his summer life as a child in his grandparents’ seaside cottage on Islesford, an island link he idealized and maintained throughout his life. He started work at the Northeast Harbor Library in 1971. In 1973 he met and married his wife of 45 years, Miriam Louise Mahon. Bob became Director in 1975 and enjoyed serving 40 years at his beloved Northeast Harbor Library, overseeing seven renovations and ultimately, in 2008, opening the new facility. During his career he was honored by numerous organizations including the Northeast Harbor Library’s Don Coates Award, and the Acadia National Park’s W.O. Sawtelle award. In his time in Northeast Harbor Bob was a pillar in many community organizations, including the Volunteer Fire and Ambulance Departments, and the Police Reserve. He also filled roles on many committees and boards. Bob Pyle died on December 25, 2018. [show more]

Beatrix Cadwalader Farrand (née Jones; June 19, 1872 – February 28, 1959) was an American landscape gardener and landscape architect. Her career included commissions to design about 110 gardens for private residences, estates and country homes, public parks, botanic gardens, college campuses, and the White House. Farrand was one of the founding eleven members, and the only woman, of the American Society of Landscape Architects. Beatrix Farrand is one of the most accomplished persons, and women, recognized in both the first decades of the landscape architecture profession and the centuries of landscape garden design arts and accomplishment.
